Henna is a very useful (and traditional) treatment for damp bits of the body that tend to get heat rashes...and I bet that's part of it. Come to think of it...there are a lot of South Asian erotic paintings where there are dangly bits depicted as much more red than I recall them being in real life. The hennaeing of marriage tackle may be more for comfort, to enhance fragrance and cleanliness , than just for looks. (But....anything to improve on the "last chicken in the shop" look!) And a nice henna scent would certainly be welcome.
