 If you *do* get desperate, go to a health-food store or something and get Light Mountain hair color/conditioner, RED (the darker ones might
 be okay; don't get the lighter ones as they're neutral).  It really is
 red henna, nothing else.  Needs serious sifting (figure losing 1/4),
 but the result gave me a reasonable stain.  Note please that I'm not
 suggesting this as high quality, but as an interim measure that will
 at least work.
 Side question: Does anyone do anything with the sifted-out bits?  Are they worth grinding & re-sifting, or maybe worth making into a thick
 paste for large, solid areas (like dip or nails)?  Or are the bits
 that sift out also less potent, like chaff?
