: : Instead of trying to get sponserships and raise money, why don't : you : : just move this page to a free server. Theres lots on the web, just : : do a search and you will come up with hundreds, here are some of my : : choices, there all 100% free: : The problem is space. Here are the space limits for the first two : locations you suggest. The others don't give figures, but I doubt : they offer much more. Another consideration is "throughput", the amount of data, measured in kilobytes, that any one domain sends or receives through a server.
Free sites are fine for personal and light to medium duty sites that attract no more than a few hundred hits a week, but when the hit rate gets into the thousands, as it has for Jeremy's site, it can be a strain on a server that's carrying a number of busy accounts and slow down everyone's accesss. Keep in mind that Jeremy has so far had a "free site", courtesy of his university department's server, but he's had to give it up because the site's space requirements and throughput got too high. Free site providers operate on the assumption that their users need only a few megabytes of space and won't generate big hit rates. That keeps the visitor turnover high and maximizes the exposure of the ads and pop-ups that generate much of their revenue. They generally aren't intersted in big sites and will void the accounts of sites that outgrow their space limitations. Roy
