The groups we're reading about in class are in Egyptian Nubians, but the belief in djinn is all throughout the Islamic world -- they're even mentioned in the Koran as one of God's creations (a race of beings sort of parallel with humans who are invisible and the evil ones cause all kinds of problems. Interestingly, the djinn can be Moslem, Jewish, pagan or infidel...the last two are accused of causing all the problems in the world) And the Zar ceremony is all about making peace and negotiating with djinn who possess women. (BTW, the "patient" in the Zar ceremony is dressed like a bride and wears henna.)
