There are some great images of homemade traditional tattoo tools in
that Discovery special that was on a few weeks ago.
What I have seen is what Catherine explained with the cactus
spine...I have seen it attached to a piece of wood so it sticks out
form it like the head of a hammer. The tattooer kind of gently
pounds the skin with this pointy hammer-like thing, repeatedly in the
shape of the design (and obviously using whatever ink they use). It
is done this way in many diverse places: from Morocco to Tahiti to
Indonesia.
