I'd read a hymn to Kali from about 1700 that mentioned that she
prefers her devotees be hennaed, and she is more likely to appear
hennaed than any other deity I've found. I'd love to know when the
earliest writings about Kali were .... any mention of her in the
Mahabarata? I've not been able to find any. My books say she come
into Hinduism about c.600 .
