I have had tremendous luck using a small, soft plastic squeeze bottle with a fine metal tip. The tips are sold as applicators for fabric painting, and can be purchased at most large craft stores, i.e. Pat Catan's or Michaels. I always keep a few spare tips available during a mehndi session so if a tip gets clogged I don't have to waste time clearing it (no matter how much you sift you still can get tiny clumps). I think most of what Catherine (below) says is right on, except that I don't believe you should change your style for lack of tools. I personally LOVE doing the very intricate, feathery indian designs, as well as contemporary lacy ones, and using a toothpick is just too time intensive. I get great results from the method listed above. I think the biggest compliment I have received on my work is that indian brides-to-be are hiring me to do their mehndi. So don't give up!
