Am I drying my leaves right?

I've been experimenting with the leaves that fall off of my plant,
and while I know that there isn't enough henna there to make a proper
batch of paste, but I just wanted to dry my leaves for the first
time.
However, I can't help but notice that commercial powdered henna is a
bright green color, and has a strong scent, while my leaves turn a a
rusty brown-ish olive green color that smells like, well, lettuce.
Is there a special method to drying? What am I doing wrong. I know
I have the right kind of plant.
