Having just spent all last night at work with henna and New Skin on top of that I can answer many of your questions from this recent experience. I did a design on the back of my hand, covered it with New Skin and then, without wrapping it up, went to work. I didn't wrap it because I didn't really care if it got extremely dark or not and I needed to work and the wrap would have gotten in the way. I spent the entire evening at work (I do desktop publishing) and the New Skin and henna cracked a little and peeled a little, but it was amazingly resilient to all my movement. The color came out amazingly well also. what's really great about New Skin, compared to lemon sugar, is that you can brush the area against things and nothing chips off, nothing gets smeared AND everyone can see the design. As for the clove oil...I am a firm believer in the power of cloves with henna. I believe it helps make the stain darker. I cook my lemon juice with cloves, and then use that lemon juice to make my paste and also to do the lemon sugar mix. There are instructions on my website if you're interested (follow the link below).
