Fading out

Strange results - did a large patch of shin last night, and today the
top & bottom are dark, but the middle is relatively pale & indistinct.
It's not timing because I worked here-and-there, and finished with
some outlines. I did try dosing one part of the pattern in camphor
and another part in alcohol to see if there was an effect - but the
faded part is larger than the area where I applied these. (The
camphor area is slightly browner - less red - though no darker.)

Anyone have similar experiences or an idea what happened?
