: : I heard someone on this board mention Djinn and I was wondering
if
: : they could give me a website address where I could learn about
them.
: : Or if anyone could give me information about the Djinn I would
: : greatly appreciate it. Sorry that this is really off-topic but
I've
: : asked around and done a lot of searches and have turned up
nothing
: : useful.

: Djinn (or "jiin")is an Arabic word meaning "a spirit", either good
or
: bad. That is where our word "genie" comes from. The plural is
: "jnoun" I have a little bit about henna and jnoun at my website,
: linked below (follow the "henna" link within the site). And there
is
: a lot written about them. They play a big role in the mythology of
: Morocco and Berbers, and you can find mentions of them in
Arab/Persian
: fairytales like 1001 Arabian Nights, or Ali Baba and the 40
Thieves.

: In his book, "Arts and Crafts of Morocco", James Jereb talks about
the
: jnoun and the way different symbols are used to counteract their
: power, or protect the person. You can read any anthropological
book
: about Morocco and their will likely be mention of jnoun. I
: specifically recommend a book called "Tuhami" by ....I can't
remember
: his name....the book is a psychological look at a homeless man in
: Morocco who believes that he is "haunted" by the female jiin Aicha
: Kandisha. this book gives a lot of information about Aicha and the
: Aicha cult in Morocco, and also about the role of jnoun in Moroccan
: life. Hop

Most of what I know about the djinn are from asking a lot of
questions, but there is in addition to Kenzi's comments (BTW it's
Vincent Crapanzano - "Tuhami - Portrait of a Moroccan" 1980) there
are also some interesting notes about Aisha Kandisha on the CD "Aisha
Kandisha's Jarring Effects" -- Shabeesation! But you shouldn't run
out and buy the CD for the liner notes - the music is fab too!
I do have some reference to Djinn on my Moroccan page. If you follow
the links to "On the Trail of the Henna Djinn" there's an account of
my trip to Morocco last year. Happy Trails!
