.... I think it's henna, particularly with the warrior maiden
provenance. The Botticelli branch looks most specifically like a
botanical drawing of a henna branch, or a preserved branch. Henna is
growable in Sicily, though probably not Florence. So, Botticelli, if
he had some familiarity with henna, may only have seen it as a potted
plant, botanical drawing or pressed branch.
