I used a paintbrush for the first 8 years that I did henna. It's great for the Arabic style florals and swirls, but not very useful for tiny work. You can't thin out the henna paste all that much, at least not beyond yoghurt thickness .... you just learn to apply the henna like you're applying glaze on a pot or egg tempera thickly. It is a great way to do bold roses, vines, ferns .... in a style like blue and white floral Persian tiles. It allows you maximum line variation. The natural fiber brushes get pretty gloppy, because the henna enters the hairs and floofs them. It's a whole different genre of henna ..... quite unlike what you may be familiar with if you're used to seeing only henna from India.
