how long does henna last for hair?

I've never hennaed my hair before but I really want to. I've got all the stuff, but I'm worried about how long it will last. I've heard a few different answers - that it's "a permanent hair colour that fades gradually over time" (?), that the sun will make it go away in 4-6 weeks, or that it's just permanent. could someone please clear this up for me? thanks!
