For rice bags: just cut a square or circle out of fabric (I use flannel), stitch up the edges, leaving a space to fill (don't overfill, or the bag won't conform to the bodypart in question well), and stitch up the gap. For a very easy bag: take tube sock, fill it, and tie the top in a tight knot. You can make little pillowcase-type covers for your bags (if you're feeling ambitious), as they get dirty and can't be washed unless you empty all of the rice out first. My grandmother has arthritis, too, and these work well for her. Catherine Nielsen : when the posts about the rice (I think it was) bags for heating henna designs were? Most importantly the ones for how to make them? : I have a friend who suffers from arthritis and was having pain in her fingers the other day. She decided that she would try microwaving an oven mitt for a few seconds to get it warm and create a little warm "pocket" for her hand. (Those of you who have tried this are probably laughing about now) Well the oven mitt caught fire (apparently what happens when you nuke one *grin*) and she spent the evening cleaning out her microwave from all the smoke. Needless to say I thought maybe the heat bag instructions would come in handy for her...LOL. Luckily the only casualties of her little experiment was one oven mitt.
