Lots and lots of sifting. Plus, I add about 1/4-1/2 tsp of honey to my henna and a dash of oil. It makes the paste baby smooth, and keeps it from cracking. (plus, there's not enough honey to put the henna to sleep.) I did a batch once where I added clove powder, and the stuff was clogging all of the **&^^%$ time, even after I strained the paste through a stocking. I now soak the clove powder in lemon juice for about a day and strain the sludge out with a tea strainer, and I haven't had a problem with clogs since.
