According to my resident expert and not based on personal experience, I believe that it is still the tradition for the bride to remove ALL hair prior to her wedding. And the preferred method is sugaring. I would have to ask said expert to be 100% sure. As for bush removal as a regular part of personal hygiene, I can assert that this practice is alive and well in modern Morocco, for men and women. I was privy to a first hand account of the men's hammam and said removal, but I won't bore you with the details. One late night I saw and was seduced by an infomercial for a hair removal product that is a lot like sugaring. The "inventor" was a Arab woman living in Australia who said that she invented this product to relieve her young daughter of the shame of having overly hairy arms. The infomercial didn't mention that she was Arab, but I jumped to conclusions based on how she looked and the fact that she was using a distinctly Middle Eastern recipe. I bought some of the stuff and it works pretty well. The ingredients are basically sugar and citric acid with a few other things as preservatives and coloring agents. The stuff is called "Nads" which I suppose doesn't have any alternative meaning in Australia, but I think it fits in nicely with the whole idea of hair removal from the nether regions. If anyone is interested in this product you can find out more from (ahem...) www.nads.com. The thing that makes it better than wax is that it supposedly doesn't rip off a layer of skin and so isn't as irritating.
