Henna a leather guitar strap?

Hey guys! I want to henna a leather guitar strap for my Lebanese boyfriend, but I suspect I might have problems with commerical leather straps. (I hennaed a purse one time and nothing took, suggesting that perhaps the leather had been treated.) In this instance, does anyone know if the leather treatment can be stripped (sanded?) off a commercially made strap and then hennaed, or do I have to start with completely untreated leather?

I know this is kind of off the wall for normal henna questions, but I know that you guys are all experts so maybe you can help me out here.

P.S. To Catherine Cartwright Jones, your advice of ammonia for wood was great, I can stain it awesome now!
