The redder tones have to do with the individual plant (there do seem t to be some redder strains than others) the time of the harvest (different tannins in different quantities are in the leaf at different seasons, and the rainy-season growth has the highest quantites of the red tones), the freshness (off the bush is the reddest), and the acidity vs the base ph of the mix. There is also clearly some variation in the individual skin's reaction to the color ; in a group of several people, some will have a redder take, some will have a browner take.
