You've just hit on: one of the many reasons why doing henna is so popular. : : I find it makes a big difference how much the client cares about what : is being done. Some just wander up, quickly pick a design and just : say "I want that", but if a client takes time over choosing a design, : maybe asks for changes, and generally takes an interest, then yes, : you get an instant bond with that person. I have found the exact thing to be true. I don't get all spiritual on my clients, but i try to let them know that henna is what they make it into. If they treat it only as a temporary tattoo, then it is probably not going to be my most inspired work, but if they really go for a design that strikes them and is inspired by the moment, it comes out wonderfully and everybody has a better time. It even happens when i henna myself! Last night we had a big thunderstorm for a while, and i was hennaing at the time. I had a mad urge to do a henna design with the Persian word for "Thunder" and big swirls of energy and force surrounding it. It came out great, and i am happy with it. So the general mood of the process can really affect the outcome. If you are hennaing with a grudge, the work suffers! Similarly so if you are only in it for the $$. Some artists i have seen on my travels looked like some of the most unhappy people on earth! These were all black death "artists" mind, but they are the perfect example of the attitude *not* to have while you henna. It's the classic 'sit in the chair, i'll do a crappy job of yer henna, and you will pay me and get out of my face' mindset. Not a fun thing to have, and even less fun to endure! I hope that wasn't all deep and spiritual, cuz that wasn't what i was going for! ~Nick : : The grooming comparison is good, but there's also something a bit : magical about the fact that this person has decided to trust you to : apply something to their skin that will become part of them for a : little while.
