This leads me to believe that the tattoo vs. henna thing is all about macho attitudes, looking down one's nose at the tradition that doesn't require a belt of whiskey and nerves of steel. I have found the same thing in my henna work; I talk to lots of tattooed women who love henna but the tattooed men feel they have to argue with me and challenge me. At one fair I was approached by a lot of older men; for some reason they were all ex-merchant marine or ex-navy. They all had the dancing girl/sword through the heart tattoos from their youth. Most of them were fascinated with henna and most said that they regretted getting their tattoos. I got to see their tattoos and they had not aged as well as the men...most were blurry to the point of being indistinct and they looked a little strange on droopy liver-spotted skin.
