I dumped in a at least a teaspoon of terpinol into 2 heaping tablespoons of henna paste When I added the tea tree oil, I may have added near a teaspoon to 2 heaping tablespoons again. I did the same with neroli, and got some significant darkening, but not near what happened with terpinol or Tea Tree. On the other hand, neroli smelled wonderful, and might be a good mask for yukky oils. Neroli doesn't have anywhere near the terpines that Tea Tree does... Tea Tree can be up to 35% terpines. There are several others that are right up there. I can't wait to do testing at Sirius! This could be a helluva breakthrough for henna artists who aren't all that fond of "mystery meat" ingredients in pre-made pastes! Back to Tea Tree oil.... everyone who's had the Tea Tree stuff has commented on the funky smell (like athlete's foot preparations). That might be less of a factor on backs. legs, shoulders and upper arms, though! Hands are often near one's nose (eating and such) so are more noticable. I really think the answer to getting home-made paste to kick in like Earth Henna or Mud is to find a mix of high terpine content something or other that works for you! The results have been so far very similar ... that odd color, the fast stain, the quick demise ... and intense stain on skin that doesn't normally take henna very well. The henna is going in about normally ... BUT the polar solvent qualities of the terpines are oxidizing(?) the henna quickly in that top layer. Granted, you could probably accomplish something similar with turpentine, gasoline, benzine, etc, etc ... and that IS what many indigenous recipes use (and likely some of those nasty mehlabiyas that reek of citronella lamp oil) ! I would prefer to look harder and find something with the same characteristics without the toxicity!
