Are you straining your paste through a stocking after mixing it? If
so that could account for the runny consistency. It is best to mix
it up a little thicker than you think is right and then strain it.
It will become a little thinner from straining it.

It is a general rule for me, to make the paste thicker than I think
because I can always add some liquid to it to get the right
consistency.
