Actually, the word "tattoo" came from the Polynesian word for the method they used to decorate their skin, and that was strictly puncturing the skin and inserting dye. That is the correct root of the word but there is also the connotation of tattoo which is a permanent image on the skin applied with a needle that pierces the skin and inserts dye. Either way, it's a far cry from henna which is neither permanent nor invasive. I don't think that differentiating ourselves from tattooing is an attempt to elevate. It's all apples and oranges. Tattoo artists are artists using a particiular medium just like henna artists create their art in their own medium. My objection to the term "henna tattoo" is that it blurs the lines between the two arts and leads people to believe that they are the same, and further, that henna comes in different colors, especially black, like tattoos. And if you still believe that they are all the same, then why not simply call tattoos "henna" or "mehndi"?
