Cleopatra for all!Posted by Anne on June 2, 2001 at 20:35:59: In reply to: Re: Addendum (sp??) posted by Zimra on June 2, 2001 at 18:55:59: Hej,The name of the book is "Cleopatra" and is subtitled "Histories, Dreams and Distortions." It was written by Lucy Hughes-Hallett, and the ISBN is 0-06-016216-3. I'm fairly sure I got it through the History Book of the Month Club, but, then again, it could have been at Boarders. I'm almost tempted to write to the zine in which the "article" appeared and ask them if it was supposed to be fact or fiction. There's no excuse for making up history (unless you're the winner, and Cleopatra was not) or not checking your facts, and, as a teacher, it really bothers me. Then again, would the zine forward the email to the author? Would she read/respond to it? Is this a case of Anne Rice-esque changing the past to suit yourself? Does the artist who wrote it lurk in our forum? I'm not so sure perpetuating mythology (that is, mythology in the sense that something vaguely like this took place once, somewhere by someone probably not related to the story as it is told now, and has been changed radically with each retelling) and ignorence is a good thing . . . Anne
