Allergies? Sensitivities? (perhaps a crucial post on necessary questions)Posted by Catherine Cartwright Jones on June 11, 2001 at 00:57:55: In reply to: Re: Zubeda Henna and Turpinol? posted by Catherine Cartwright Jones on June 10, 2001 at 22:14:03: Digging, digging, digging on terpinol, pineol, cineol, etc, etc.It looks to me as though an excellent questions to ask yourself or your clients when considering whether or not to use plain henna with nothing but lemon juice or rainwater .... or whether to include terpinol or other EO's is: (drum roll, ta da) "Has a perfume (or aftershave) ever given you a rash?" A search for sensitivities to terpines turned up a perfume site, and I saw components of all sorts of perfumes (like Georgio, etc, etc and all that lot), and noticed the terpines in question that nuke up henna occur in most perfumes. I've heard from several people that pre-made pastes which advertize themselves as adding only eucalyptus oil and lemon juice still can cause grievous reactions in sensitive people (though the makers swear they've never heard of anyone having a problem) ..... and looking at the constituent molecules of EO's are mostly the same molecules that make our favorite perfumes. Some people get a misery from perfumes, some don't. My daugher even gets miseries from perfumes on some parts of her body and not on other parts. Different bits of epidermis have different characteristics on the same person. (If you're doing a "bikini bits" henna, be particularly cautious!) SO .... if you're making up pastes for a gig .... Make up 2 batches. One, just henna and lemon juice. That's the "slow cooker" that you have to leave on quite a long time to get good results. Two, same stuff but add the EO that suits you to nuke up speed and color, especially on non-granular skin .... and don't use that on anyone who reports that they have had red rashes from perfumes. It appears to me that steam, heat, patience and sweat will get henna to precisely the same color as a blast of EO terpines with less time. You get to choose using time and some inconvenience versus a potential sensitivity to terpines. My preference is time, heat and sweat because they're so safe and cheap .... other people like a terpine slam dunk. Terpinol is quick. It works. It works especially well on impatient people. It's your call .... and "do perfumes raise a misery?" is the question to ask in whether or not to add terpinol or other EO's. If you've never had red raised welts from perfumes, you may be OK. ON NS... ask, "are you sensitive to nail polish or nail polish remover". If the answer is no, you should be ok with NS. On liquid latex, ask "do latex condoms give you a misery (beyond the usual annoyance)" If you don't see terror in their eyes, they're ok.
