Henna in Africa?

I understand that Northern Africa is one of the areas where henna
started. Were the people there lighter skinned than some other
African people? I was wondering, because I can't imagine how the
browns and oranges of natural henna would show up on darker skin,
unless they just did palms? Just curious.
