Re: skin sensitivities/sealants and coversPosted by Willowhawk on June 11, 2001 at 15:44:54: In reply to: skin sensitivities/sealants and covers posted by Nancy Mc on June 11, 2001 at 03:49:12: Greetings,: Does anyone ever shave an area to be hennaed? In April I was doing Mehendi for cast members of a festival, and one of the men wanted spiraling designs from ankle to knee. After getting some feedback on the forum, I discussed the options with this man. Either massive pain from tape removal...or shave. He opted to shave his legs and it didn't seem to be a big decision. He just said..."I'll shave". I'll never forget seeing him sitting in the bathtub saying "how high up do I shave?". Not to mention he shaved like a drunk chick in a hurry...there was a strip of hair he missed in the back, on BOTH legs! :) :Anyway, I then applied some henna to the owner of the shops : arm (between wrist and elbow). She also was kindof hairy. She offered : to shave the area. I told her not to. I applied NS and tried : putting gauze over it and another tape which is foam and waterproof. : The next morning she came in and the area that was under the tape was : raw. The tape had pulled her skin right off. She then had trouble : removing the new skin. She at first tried to pick it off and again : the skin came off with the NS. So, needless to say....she was kindof : a mess. She said she has very sensitive skin. I guess it was better : her than a customer.........and at least I got feedback right away. I have sensitive skin also, and can only use papertape on my hands and feet. It just rips too much of my skin off if I use it anywhere else. I refuse it even when I have blood drawn at the Dr.'s. : So, I feel so confused as to what to do to seal the design. I need a real tried and tested way to remove NS. And something to put over : that. But I also like it to be as non-complicated as possible. HELP : Do I go back to L/S? My skin is fine with NS but it doesn't seem to : make much of a difference in terms of final stain color(with or w/o). : I really like to send people on their way with an adhered : design.....to enable them to keep it on their skin as long as : possible. The NS and tape seemed to be working pretty well. : I need lots of feedback on this stuff.I'm going to be doing alot of : henna this summer and I need my act together. : Thanks so much.....I also needed to vent......Please give me as many : details as possible... I recently remember reading a post on here where the paint on NS was used primarily on the drying paste. You might give that a try. I was tinkering around with L/S on a back piece I did on my son a few months back, and I discovered an alternative that I like. After L/S-ing the paste a few times (with drying time in between), I took squares of 1-ply toilet paper (separate 2-ply into 1-ply), and one at a time I laid the square over the design. The stickiness of the L/S helped the TP adhere well, then I dabbed more L/S over the TP until it was translucent. I repeated this process of L/S:TP:L/S til the design was covered. I let that dry a bit, then I was able to put more TP over the design (to keep him from sticking to everything) and just tape the edges down. You can probably forgo that last layer of TP and just papertape over the L/S'ed TP, but TP is cheaper than papertape. The L/S'ed TP dries into a somewhat brittle paper, but removal is easier. Just peel the squares off, and usually all the paste comes right off with it. I haven't tried steaming it off, but I bet that would be much easier removal also...less traumatic on the skin. I suppose that honey and lemon juice might be a better alternative than L/S, being that honey is beneficial to skin. Good luck... Willowhawk
