It's like anyexercise...painful the first time because the muscles aren't used to it. Also, if you only use j-bottles once every 2 or 3 weeks your muscles lose the memory and their tone. I think the best thing to do is use them a little bit often, gradually building up to several hours. Your hand should be okay. Also, there is a way to massage the muscles while you are working so they don't cramp up on you. Essentially when you work with the bottles your muscles contract and shorten and when they are like that too long without a break they cramp. You need to massage them to lenghten the muscles. Using your other hand, grasp around your thumb way down at the base, where the bone meets the main part of the hand and squeeze and pull on it like you are milking it, or like you are trying to get the toothpaste out of the tube. You can use some kind of massage oil to make it a little easier, and especially good is an oil that contains arnica which is good for sore muslces. You can do this during a break in your hennaing, or do it after the fact. I learned this little trick from a client who is a physical therapist. That's my advice as a seasoned j-bottle user. Kenzi
