As for doing henna on the streets or in parks, this is technicall illegal, tho the portrait painters have an "artist's vendor's license". There are a number of spots around the city where there are lots of craftspeople set up, mostly on the weekends but also throughout the week. None of them have permission to be there but they are tolerated. We set up amongst them a lot. During the early years of Mayor Guiliani's reign he was real hard ass about street vending (among other things) and was even trying to close down people who had legitimate licenses like guys who had hot dog stands etc. There was a lot of outcry against this from the people of NYC as we feel that it infringes on a person's right to earn a living and also the pushcarts as well as the homeless people selling interesting trash and the craftspeople selling their crafts is an intrinsic part of the city, part of its strange charm. Now that Guiliani is embroiled in various issues as his reign draws to a close he has forgotten about the vendors and the trade has flourished. People now know that they can go to certain neighborhoods and see interesting stuff not available at stores. It's been great for our henna business as we can take advantage of openings in our schedules and hope that they coincide with beautiful weather. Kenzi
