Re: Henna and the NYPDPosted by Anne Beltestad on June 19, 2001 at 18:39:39: In reply to: Henna and the NYPD...not a new Fox cop show posted by Kenzi on June 18, 2001 at 17:29:53: Yep, it was very entertaining! The cops in particular were exactlylike something out of central casting. If all cops were like those two, the world would be a better place. I must say that I felt just as much at home hennaing with Team Kenzi as with Gilded Lilies. They rock! This Brooklyn street fair was about five times the size of a comparable one-day event in Seattle, with more people spending money. Unfortunately I didn't ask Kenzi for directions and so wandered for a long time in the opposite direction of the booth, but got to feel the vibes of the crowd. Also, there was no sitting on the ground there...even if we'd had all the tons of blankets and pillows Gilded Lilies is known for, the street was typical NY filthy with standing puddles from the rain that followed me from Seattle. Less people in NY seem to know about henna, but more people seem to be willing to try new things. All in all, a great time, despite the rain! : Yesterday we had a street fair in Brooklyn and because we had : torrential rains in the morning we didn't set up until the middle of : the afternoon. Anne Beltested, from this forum, was present and I : think she brought some Seattle rain with her! Actually, they say it : was the rain storms that flooded Texas recently. Once it cleared up, : however, the sky was a brilliant clear blue and people poured into the : street to check things out. We hadn't even set up our booth when : people started buying an asking for henna, so we hennaed amid half : empty suitcases, folded chairs and half of our booth structure built. : Even tho we got a late start they wouldn't let us stay late to make up : for it, I guess because we were blocking a major avenue. : : The cops kept coming by to remind us to pack up but we had clients : whose henna was drying and others who were begging for a quick design. : On their third pass the cops started asking us questions about henna. : One guy was a walking stereotype of a Brooklyn cop, with the accent, : the gruff manner, the pot belly, the tattoos and the heart of gold! : he was fascinated with Ida's tattoos (Ida is my regular henna partner) : and was talking tattoos with her. Meanwhile his partner, a perky : Hispanic woman was talking henna with me. She heard about it being : used at Indian weddings. We gave her a couple of freebies and she was : thrilled. The guy said it wasn't for him, even at that price, but he : did want to know if you could smoke henna! He believes that we might : have an unknown cure for cancer and therefore are duty-bound to smoke : it or eat it to find out! In all this chatter we managed to henna : another client or so but finally we had to break down and go home. : : The day before we did some guerilla henna in Central Park. That was a : very strange situation because we were set up where the portrait and : caricature artists usually set up. So people didn't quite know what : to make of us. Once we started hennaing we attracted a crowd of : gawkers and some clients. We are always in search of new places to do : henna...maybe next week we'll set up on the Staten I
