I believe that there is a possible: chemical interaction which could really end up looking awful but : unfortunately the only image I have in my head is one where there : wasn't a disaster. My henna partner, Ida, bleached her hair blonde, : then dyed it purple. Ah! That purple stuff is a food-type vegetable based coloring! Not the usual alkaline stuff. That's why it fades so fast. Anyway ... the henna braid technique, as I've read it described ... you separate out sections of the hair, and work henna paste into the long sections, then braid those ... so henna is top to bottom IN the braid. You do this with 7, 11 or some significant number of braids (if you're bothering with that) Then you wind all the braids into a turban and wear it for about 3 days (rural Iraqi method). Plaiting henna INTO the hair this way, does actually seem a very effective way to get the henna evenly into the hair, all the way down, if you have thick long hair. (Difficult to get the henna evenly all through it otherwise) When you finally take it all down .... red plait special! To keep the plaits .. I suspect the hair is rinsed free of henna (or maybe it's just a good time to jump in the creek) with the plaits still in, and then dried. From a look at the combs, and the resulting crimps, this seems likely.
