I worked part timefor the public library and when I recently decided to start doing henna as a freelancer for clients, I mentioned it in passing one day to my boss. She was astounded by the serendipity as they were putting together young adult summer programs for the libraries and had been looking all over town for a mehndi artist to no avail. Once the word got out to the other librarians about myself and my service, I was booked for 4 summer presentations immediately by different branches. While working on the kids, I "lecture" on henna, the culture of mehndi, as well as how teens can get started doing their own creative work as henna artists for themselves and their friends. Limiting the programs to 10 kids per hour has worked great, and I often can talk a librarian into applying L/S for me so I can work fast. The response has been great, from boys as well as girls, and rewarding to share with the young folks. It's been great for me as well to make some money, I charge a flat hourly rate for the presentations, doing this art form that I love. I still can't believe people pay me for this! But the best paycheck is the grin of a satisfied client, young or old, who is happy with the work I've done for them.
