Re: Old, weak henna with a purpose.Posted by Maureen on July 10, 2001 at 17:25:44: In reply to: Re: Old, weak henna with a purpose. posted by Joe B on July 8, 2001 at 05:01:22: What I am finding is that I can more accurately predict the colorwith the older henna powder and paste than I am able to predict the color outcomes of the new henna powder left on for shorter periods of time. With one supply of old henna, if I put nothing extra but water, lemon and sugar in it and leave it on over night it consistently gives a very light orangy tan (after a day). If I add cajeput and apply right away it goes a deeper tan and brown. If I add the cajeput and apply the next day it begins a faint chocolate and ends up a wonderful milk chocolate color. It gives me the color consistently if I put it on the same body part. If I change from the back of my hand to my palm, I get a different range of colors but I get them consistently. (i.e. applying to palm one day after adding cajeput results in a deep deep ox blood color (brownish burgandy with red overtones) The same thing has happened with my other supplies of old henna...but with a different range of colors. What it has given me and what I sought was a palatte of tans, oranges, browns, burgandies, etc. results that I can rely on obtaining from the specific henna applied. And it is the old weaker henna that is giving me the lighter more muted tones that are not so wonderful for one color designs but are necessary for multicolored designs. I am finding the contrast in shades among the different henna applied only weakens and become similar when the newer henna that I use for the deep rich color begins to lighten and fade out. Then the contrast in colors is less visible and a first glance it all appears to be the same. But this has taken about a week to happen. And that is not bad. Let me know what is happening with your experiments with timing. I guess I ended up with supplies of different henna because I kept trying to search for "THE" super henna that gave the deep deep red burgandyish brown/black color. And therefore was buying up a lot of different stuff. What I was looking for from henna is what is being obtained with the EOs. I was going to toss the older henna and purchase some of the henna that has been recommended on the forum (I am still going to purchase henna from Kenzi, Castle Art and Navaid) but I am not going to toss what I have since I found a purpose for it. I have to get some of Kenzi's, Castle Art's and Navaid's henna as I continue my search for this deep deep red burgandyish brown/black color that I keep seeking. Maureen
