that's a GOOD thingPosted by Lisa G. on July 13, 2001 at 17:10:41: In reply to: artists thinking big thoughts, and that's a GOOD thing posted by Darlahood on July 12, 2001 at 06:14:51: : "Public art is accessible work of any kind that cares about,: challenges, involves, and consults the audience for or with whom it : is made, respecting community and environment." : : Here's some stuff taken right from my course syllabus: : : What is a public place? : How do we encounter ourselves and others in public places? : Who is the public for art? : Where is the place for art? : How can art encounter the public? : Where is our public, our place? : What can our presence in this place reveal about our existence in our : other places? : Who are we in this place or in another? : What baggage have we brought to this place? : Are we really experiencing this place or are we always only seeing : that which we already know. Getting flashbacks from my museum studies classes in college (in a good way)....as long as we're pondering the big questions, here's two biggies you didn't mention - What is art? What is the difference between art and craft? I think that the second question is what we all are facing in trying to get more acceptance in our communities, both from the public and from ethnic henna artists. I think most of us are trying to do good artwork and promote the traditions behind it, while we are viewed as moneymakers/ craftspeople (thanks in no small part to the Black Death purveyors). Just my two cents worth.... Maureen, another idea I didn't see scanning these responses is to contact your local paper's features editor. Especially if you are offering a class/workshop through a library, or even your own store, they might do an article in conjunction. Good luck! Lisa G
