A simple test will tell youPosted by BarefootSophie on July 16, 2001 at 14:35:03: In reply to: Smoking Henna? posted by Ian Simpson on July 15, 2001 at 16:29:05: Normally I'm not the go-with-the-crowd type ("Hey, let's run off acliff! 50,000 lemmings can't be wrong!") but in this case I think the other folks who've replied are on target: that's probably NOT henna... here in the US, the FDA's done some extensive testing on it and I feel pretty certain that if there was a compound in it that could give someone a jolly, they'd have warning labels all over it faster than you could say "I didn't inhale." Here's a couple simple ways to find out if it's henna or not: 1) Henna is a fine powder, is usually bright to olive green colored and smells a bit like new-mown hay. How does the stuff he's got compare? 2) Just to be sure... Nab a spoonful from him, mix it with just enough lemon juice to make a really thick paste, and let that sit overnight. In the morning, add a little hot tea or coffee, stir it up well, and then dab a small amount onto an inconspicuous patch of skin and let it dry. If it leaves an red-orange stain, it's henna. If it doesn't... maybe it's time for a talk. Or a good rehab program. As in any situation involving a child's questionable behavior, prepare for the worst but hope for the best. Sophie
