Hi Ian,

You came seeking some information from the forum and brought a new
piece of information for some of us. Folks on the henna forum
advocate the use of natural henna for body decoration and sometimes
the coloring and conditioning of hair. You could get really wonderful
information about that from the people here. The use of henna for
other purposes is probably outside of the expertise of most folks
here. I do hope, however, that someone who knows more about the
smoking and consumption of henna will show up here and offer you the
information you are seeking. Obviously you are concerned about your
son. Until someone can give you some more scientific evidence about
the effects of henna consumption and smoking why don't you try this
experiment. Take a small ceramic bowl or cup and put craft sand in
the bottom (about an inch or two). Then take a heaping tablespoon of
your son's henna (or go buy your own) and pile it in the center of
the sand. Then light it. Smell the fumes, look at the color of the
smoke and when it finishes burning rub the residue between your
fingers. If you feel like it, buy two to three different brands of
henna and do the same thing. I think you may be able to reach some
conclusions on your own to compare with what you discover through
your research. If you like what you are seeing, smelling and feeling
after your experiments then use that to weigh against everything else
you find out. And if you do not like what you see, smell and feel
then use the information in the same way. If your son's use for
henna is a widely held practice then I am sure you will find the
information you are looking for very soon.

Maureen
