The other possibility is ammonia crystals. Kree knows more about this than I do. I was told that you mix them into the henna paste but the method she heard about involved mixing it into plaster and slathering that onto dried henna (I think). Nick tried this method and didn't find that it turned the henna black. The woman you met may have had a combination of various techniques: any of the above, and maybe gasoline in the paste etc. Also, when you have henna done in Morocco it is almost always darker than when you do it exactly the same here in the US (including the outside temperature). CCJ suggested to me that this may be due to the high lime content in the water in Morocco. Maybe I should start bottling the stuff and bringing it back with me! ;-)
