I work at WalMart here in my cow town home and it is like the hopping place of the town as its one of those supercenter ones with groceries and general merchandise. Well anyhow, I'm a cashier, so the designs that are on my hands are HIGHLY visible.... One day some woman said "Honey, that's not permanent is it?" to a design I was pretty proud of. When I told her it wasn't she said "Oh good, I hoped you were just bored, and it wasn't permanent" like the design was the ugliest thing she'd ever seen. I get a lot of old men asking me if it is magic marker, which is so stupid, honestly if I was going to draw on myself in magic marker, don't you think I'd use more than one color, and a color other than the color henna is? *shakes her head* Another gem was one woman who kept saying, though she apparently knew little to nothing about the art, that it comes off if it gets wet. *laughs and rolls her eyes at this one now that she thinks about it* After I got done telling her that it doesn't simply wash off, she still said, "Oh its not for me then, I do hair and my hands are always wet, it would come right off." Some people huh? To my great surprise though, a lot of older women have told me that they thought the designs on my hands were very beautiful, and one actually suggested that I do mehendi professionally, cause she liked my designs so much. This town being rather geriatric and a bit conservative, I figured the old ladies to be the ones hating it and the young folks going nuts over it, however the world has amazed me once more! I think my biggest insult though comes right from here in my own home. My dad and younger *the one under me* sister *I have 2 sisters and a bro, all younger* are absoultely amazing with art... (tosses her lil sis's cartoon webpage at ya if ya care to see what she means http://www.geocities.com/katerina_bellfairy) and they look at my henna in disgust!!!!! I've asked both if they would like a design or if they would do a design on me, but both staunchly refuse. Being bored and attempting to come up with new designs last night I whipped out my trusty pen and doodled on my feet, I was out of henna paste for the moment. I came up with some pretty great new designs but earlier today * I have one heck of a time getting pen ink off of me but doodle on myself all the time anyhow* I tried to show him and he was all like "what is it, more of that body art stuff" as he sighed in something close to disgust or just plain denial of my chosen art. As I've mentioned already, I can't draw on paper, it looks miserable, but on skin I'm better than average I'd say. Its frustrating to be in a household where you're not appreciated. On the up side though, my lil bro loves it, as does my other sis, and my bf is willing to let me play all the time. I guess I can't complain much, just need to find a way to deal with it. Blessings and wishes of more understanding for all of us suffering artists, Sarah
