I've used several different brands of henna powder. I have to drive about 40 miles to find something that resembles fresh (as in, hasn't been on the shelf at Sally Beauty Supply long enough to apply for Social Security). The stores I shop change brands fequently. The design differs in color depending on the area, like most people. On the palm (which is NEVER irritated), it's dark brick red/black. On the finger backs, it's brick red, and on the back of the hand (where the irritation is worst), it's a light reddish/orange (thinner skin). I've tried Nu-Skin and didn't like it at all. It smells, it doesn't seem to darken the color any, although in some instances, it is convenient (one lady had me henna her ear lobe! You can't wrap that....). I use lemon/sugar, several layers, then a toilet paper wrap, a plastic wrap, and a topper of some kind (usually a wooly winter sock to keep body heat in). I sleep with the package. After considering the responses I'm getting, I suspect that Catherine is right - it's the lemon juice.
