When to oxidise terped henna?

Hi all,
If i wanted to use the ammonia trick to blacken a terped henna
design, when would i do it? I know that normally it would be done
just after the paste is removed, but that's when it's left on all
night... i usually leave terped pastes on for 2-3 hours, and they are
orange when i remove the paste. Would the ammonia affect the
terpines, or vice versa?
