Sometimes you can tell by the smell. But, I have had fresh henna that did not have that strong henna smell and it was both fresh and excellent henna. If your henna didn't work after five tries of the same stuff...it probably is the henna. If you share your recipe, the brand of henna powder and the procedure you followed maybe we can see if there is a step you can add or alter. Sometimes it is not just the recipe but the timing as well. A pretty sure bet for fresh henna would be to purchase some from some of the people on the forum who supply it. You can go to the "Where" page and get the names and contact information from suppliers.
