Perhaps more relevant to fiber arts than skinPosted by Catherine Cartwright Jones on August 23, 2001 at 22:16:38: In reply to: I found an interesting statement about tannins and trace amounts of iron in essential oils. posted by Faery Ring on August 23, 2001 at 21:53:59: I'm not certain if the iron is helpful with henna.I did try several experiments with black iron oxide in my henna mixes .... and never got any improvement. However .... iron oxide IS used in Oak gall dyes for wool and cotton. This however requires mordants (to "rough up" the fiber, and long simmering. That may mean I didn't see results because skin cells didn't admit iron oxide when I mixed it directly into the paste, because I didn't simmer my skin or trash it with a caustic. If there's a way to get iron oxide to breach skin cells, at body temp, I don't know about it .... is there?
