Lauren, the only thing in your procedure that might be the cause
would be the 12 hour wait after adding the cajeput. I would use the
paste right away after adding the cajeput. A friend of mine used a
totally dead paste that had been mixed 2 years ago (!!) and frozen
since then. She added about 20 drops of cajeput to one j-bottle of
paste and used it. The color came out pretty well considering the
age of the paste. I find that I get better color if I add cajeput to
a paste that I created 2-3 days before and already added cajeput to.
Does that make sense?

If all else fails, maybe it is your powder or the fact that you froze
it.
