mehalabiya oilPosted by Dania O'Brien on September 2, 2001 at 16:36:08: I read that lots of people are asking what that mystery ingredient isin mehlabiya oil that gives that distinctive dark stain and smell. I made some enquiries myself a few years ago with the help of a friend who is a chemist. It is a chemical called terpineol or chloroxylenol, but it is better known as the chemical used in 'karvol' capsules (the stuff you put on childrens pillows when they have a cold). There is however one drawback in that although you don't need large amounts, it is extremely expensive to buy and you can only order it from a chemist, it retails at about one hundred pounds for one litre and that was three years ago. Despite that though I have found that the usual oils (eucalyptus and small amounts of clove oil) mived with a packet of karvol works just a well and is relatively free of any irritating allergic reactions, but the key is to use i would say seventy five % eucalyptus and the rest a mixture of clove and karvol. Hope this is of some help and clears up the mystery smell! lol Regards Dee O'brien (Skinflicks)
