I thought it was a result of my own weird protestant-upbringing-cleanliness thing. I have found that even getting henna wet 16 hours, or 20 hours, after application seems to affect the stain. Interesting that you remove paste to darken, and that Shannon's results seem to be the same (she said sealing down prevents oxidation?!) Overall I think terping makes it better, NOt eye-popping, but then again CCJ's stains on herself have almost always been darker than anything I get. When I was a fanatical bike racer I was getting some darker stains due to being fitter, but was yet more impatient and restless and flaked or washed it off. My theory is that *if* you have the time to really take care of henna as they did back in the "good old days", hanging out not touching anything for a good day or so, steaming/applying heat over and over, waiting 36 -48 hours before any water touches it (think desert), you're gonna get really dark stains, as opposed to those you can get from waking up going to work/school and trying not to get it dirty or wet in the midst of a busy modern life. Most of us can't steam unless we're at home. As I get more settled in NYC I will try to experiment more...look for Gilded Lilies East coming soon! ;) Anne : : Yes, I think that NOT washing off the dry henna paste, letting it : : flake away on its own, and not taking a shower or otherwise being : : exposed to water for 12 hours or so after that, definitely lets : your : : henna have time to combine with your skin cells so it can get a : : headstart on the darkening process. : : I haven't had exactly the results described when using terp henna, : but I sure can get a decent stain in under 2 hours, which is : definitely a bonus to me. : : I've done a LOT of experimenting & tracking my results with myself as : a henna guinea pig -- diff. brands, terp or unterp, how long it was : terped before application, how old mixes were (kept in the fridge), : how dark the stains appeared, how long they lasted, and aftercare. : : Generalizing, I've found that wetting the skin on a terped stain : within 12 hours of paste removal resulted in a drastic difference in : how dark the stain would get. If I could henna, then remove paste : before bed, overnight is often what worked best while darkening. : : Also, I found (for myself) it made no difference if I sealed a terp : paste w/my glitter goop or left it to dry and flake off. The goop is : helpful for keeping it on the skin, for sure, so I often did that. : : A FEW times I had stunning brick-red, dark choc., and almost black : results, but thats like 1 outta 10 (and not always w/ terp paste!). : More often Im getting equally good stains w/terp paste in much less : time as I did w/ unterped and loads of henna-on time. I also got : areas that traditionally dont stain well to take a respectable (but : not eye popping mind you) color. : : I'm still experimenting and just ordered a wholllle lotta cajeput (8 : oz for $23 inc. shipping) & Im seriously hoping this particular caj : is good, or Ive got tons to make my paste smell minty fresh I guess. : : I'm pleased overall -- even sans the consistent mind boggling : results -- as I feel I now have an even better paste to use for : impatient folks at big events. That is a huge step in the right : direction, I feel. : : Next I want to try mixing TT3 and caj and see how that acts. Hope : sharing some results helps the cause.
