Bad Henna Press in the UK by The Mail and Radio One - please helpPosted by Archie Archer on September 10, 2001 at 19:12:49: I was in the phone shop the other day when over the radio there was aterrible misinformed report about henna. An Indian lady was saying on one hand "henna has been used for 5,000 years" but "don't get a henna tattoo done when you are away on holiday as henna is dangerous". I madly telephoned Radio One to get them to stop their broadcast because they were misinforming the public. Henna is good, henna is safe but YES don't get a "black" henna - I don't like the two words side by side, this makes me uncomfortable. The company went off to a show the next day in Glostershire, I do over 40 shows every year in the UK and we had all day mothers dragging their daughters away from us, saying that "henna" was in the papers - henna is dangerous! "No you're not getting a henna tattoo!" I stopped every person I heard say this and showed them a pre-printed sheet that we take everywhere we go and every henna tattoo that we do we educate the public that there is no such thing as "black" henna - this is a dangerous chemical called PPD and causes irritation, blistering, scarring etc etc. I've seen some horrific scars in my time, as I say, we are at 40 shows a year - each show 50,000 - 500,000 so we see a lot of folk every year and really are doing some positive education - until the press ruin it for everyone. Whilst stopping people at the show, I heard that there had also been an article in The Mail. Again really badly reported and the public were reacting and believing henna to be bad and dangerous. Please did anyone read this? I'm rewriting an article for both Radio One and The Mail and want them to correct the damage they have already done. I'm off in October to a show in Glasgow and I've got all the Press there listening and will be doing some positive and accurate reporting, so please help if you can. Thanks Archie
