I have an acquaintance who works in what used to be the World Trade
Center. I have no idea if he still lives. That is painful enough to
imagine-life must be hell for anyone who put their family or friends
on an aircraft this morning or kissed them goodbye as they went to
work in the World Trade Center or Pentagon.
I'm glad I no longer work for an airline, but many friends still do.
I have been with them through the training on how airline customer
service personnel are supposed to handle the incoming calls from
worried/bereaved relatives and customers and how to notify them when
we are sure it is their loved one who died. Most of us cried during
the training and prayed we would never need it. Now some do and I
feel for them almost as much as I feel for those who died so
senselessly today. The deliberateness and detail that went into this
horrifies me. Nothing is worth trading away your humanity like that.
