OT/ My response to Hatred.Posted by txilar on September 18, 2001 at 15:57:42: The best way to take a stand against hatred is to take a standagainst hatred. Don't tolerate racist, mis/un-informed, or retaliatory remarks. Correct wrongs if you hear them, and like Zimra said, support your Arab/Muslim community. I wrote the following to send out to friends and family to let them know where I stand and to put some truth out there. Information about Islam and Arabs/Arab Americans is, as I'm sure many of you here know, very fraught with misinformation and outright falsehood. Even if you don't believe in Islam, you must believe in the truth- don't support propaganda, support people! Regarding recent tales of harassment and threats to Arab Americans and Muslims, I thought this verse from the Quran and words of the prophet Muhammad should let people know that terrorism and murder are not Islamic tenets and have nothing to do with religion. Terrorists are after power and profit- nothing more nor less. When Americans succumb to hatred they succumb to the force that drives terrorists. We speak of standing together, but when we exercise hatred to our fellow citizens we are not standing together, rather we stand with the terrorists, and indeed, we shake their hands. If, in the course of events of life we are wrong about a person, they pulled one over on us. If we commit a wrong against any person, we pull one over on ourselves, regardless of the circumstance. Giving in to hatred puts a stick in the same fire where sits the terrorists. No true American wants to sit at that fire. Let your fire be instead a light to chase away darkness and encompass everyone. Like the saying goes, 'united we stand, divided we fall.' If we continue to divide, history will bear that out. Don't let the terrorists or their hatred enter your heart. It's that simple. "O you who believe! When you conspire together, conspire not for crime and wrongdoing and disobedience to the messenger, but conspire together for righteousness and piety and keep your duty toward Allah, unto Whom you will be gathered." -Qur'an, Surah 58:9 Here is Muhammad on humility: "Strength does not lie in carrying heavy loads: a camel can do that. The essence of strength lies in taming your temper and anger." Always too, remember the phrase "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Don't send out hate unless you want it back. Be strong, be vigilant, be fair, be an American. Peace!, niko
