OK...a light bulb just went off while looking at Nick's picture.
When people have spoken about "scanning" their design, I thought they
were taking a picture of the design and then scanning it. Are
you/they actually putting their hand or foot on the scanner screen
and scanning the design directly without taking a picture? I had
been wondering how people got their hands to be so flat in their
pictures and how they got such great upclose and detailed images. If
I am off base and something else is happening, please give me the
secret. Does this also work for the back of the hand?

If it is scanned the way I now think, do you do this by placing your
hand on the glass...drape a cloth over the hand...let the lid
down...and then scan the image? I hope this is correct and I have
discovered the elusive secret to great pics.
